Hello everybody. It’s Kozi, Programs Outreach Coordinator for Peers Envisioning and Engaging in Recovery Services, aka PEERS. Happy New Year! So, tell me, do you still have all the wrapping paper, boxes, and stuffing that your Christmas presents came wrapped in? Is there a reason that you haven’t gotten rid of it? What are you waiting for?
Well, that is what I want to talk to you about today; holding on to stuff instead of discarding it. Are you a collector, a gatherer, a clutterer, or a hoarder? Many of us are. We simply have too much stuff. I do. Too much stuff; over here, over there, in there, up there, down there and under that, and maybe in storage. I’m talking about a problem that leaves our homes or apartments disorganized, untidy and basically, deprives us of our space.
PEERS is offering a 19-week support group called Buried in Treasures, a guide to help address compulsive acquiring, saving, and hoarding disorder. In week one, we’ll identify, define, and assess what hoarding disorder is and discuss the difficulty of discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. We’ll talk about the natural course of hoarding, and whether there is a genetic component to your problem.
Special issues like shame, a lack of awareness of just how bad the problem is, denial, and the psychological effect on one’s mental health is also talked about in week one.
If you are interested in getting help in this area and can commit to participating and completing the 19-week session of Buried in Treasures, contact Zakiya Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org or signup by filling out this form:
The Buried in Treasures support group starts soon, and space is limited so act now. We look forward to working with you.
