Research has shown that the African American community is routinely underserved and inappopriately served in mental health care. According to the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities, African Americans are disproportionately misdiagnosed, resulting in incorrect treatment. African Americans, at twice the rate of whites, are prescribed the older generations of antidepressants or antipsychotic medications, suffering irreversible disability caused by long-term use.
In addition, African Americans tend to receive higher doses of high side-effect medications and are disproportionately subjected to restraints and involuntary medications. The Social Inclusion Campaign strives to create a community in which people who are struggling with mental health issues — and their families — receive the support and inclusion they deserve.
