Action Alerts /Thumbs up to CBS' Mike Wallace for PSA on recovery

A few encouraging words in fifteen seconds can impact someone’s life. Former “60 Minutes” journalist Mike Wallace has battled depression since the mid-1980s. He went public about his diagnosis years later. In a brief “CBS Cares” PSA about depression he destigmatizes mental health. “If you’re seriously depressed there’s nothing, repeat, nothing to be ashamed of. Depression is a treatable medical disease, “ Wallace says. Then he gives hope of recovery and shares he was able to beat depression because he received treatment.

Issues such as breast cancer screenings, alcoholism and practicing safe sex are common themes in PSAs. Thumbs up to CBS for also recognizing mental health as a critical issue in our society that should be addressed without shame.

Dear Mr. Wallace and the CBS Cares Team,

Thank you for your PSA on depression. Your message was short, but packed a lot of hope. In just a few seconds you addressed that living with a mental health condition is something not to be ashamed of and recovery from depression is possible. Often, people living with mental health challenges don’t seek treatment because of stigma and their own self-shame. Mr. Wallace, your words and example may have saved someone’s life. And to the CBS Cares Team, nice work and I hope to see more PSAs about mental health issues on your network.

Thank you.
