Action Alerts /Canada's York Region news site profiles one man's mission to end mental health stigma

Sometimes, all people need is hope and support. The Canadian news site Yorkregion.com recently published an article, “Man Battles Stigma,” about Constantin Nastic, a man who suffers from depression and attention deficit disorder. As a result of humiliation and lack of compassion from doctors, Nastic was on the brink of suicide. When he finally received caring, non-judgmental support from a nurse in the psychiatric ward, he bounced back. Nastic is currently on a mission to change perceptions about mental health and break through the harmful reluctance caused by stigma. Through Ontario Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), Nastic counsels others to help them overcome what he himself had to battle. LHIN’s and Nastic’s goals are to combat stigma, give hope to those with mental health issues, and teach others how to treat patients humanely.

Reporter Chris Traber coverage of Constantin Nastic’s story gives readers the things most emphasized by Nastic himself: hope. Through stories like Nastic’s, we can further spread this hope and support for the mental health community.

Take Action!

Dear Mr. Traber,
Thank you for your excellent coverage of Constantin Nastic in your story “Man Battles Stigma.” Nastic provides a clear example of how government mental health systems need to be improved. Nastic’s own personal story shows that recovery is indeed possible with the right support system. Hopefully more readers learned from your article that all we need is a little hope and the fight to end healths stigma is not easy. Thank you for covering a story that will affect readers and hopefully cause a ripple of change in society and the mental health community.

Thank you.
